Windows/IE - Scripting question

I'm not done pulling my hair out myself on this one, but thought I would
ask anyway in case anyone else had already dealt with something similar
before.

I have a site that opens a new window to enter the actual site. There is a
button in that window, that is used to "exit" the site, which basically
just closes that window, leaving the visitor at the original window with a
modified "thanks for stopping by" message.

The button is a graphical image, that is linked with the <a> tag, and an
"onClick" javascript call to a function that includes something like

	top.window.close();

This seems to work fine on a Mac with both Netscape 4.+ and IE5, but on a
windows machine with IE the function returns an error.

Any ideas?
